Sectional schedules reset

Weather forces shuffling to postseason brackets

Keeping track of postseason baseball brackets in the Mountain State is no easy task, and when weather forces changes to be made, it’s nearly impossible.

The good news for area high school teams this year is they don’t have to schedule around a break for standardized testing, giving coaches more options of when to play their games and plenty of time to get them all completed in time.

Here’s a look at where area teams stand after the first few days and Thursday’s downpour.

Class AAA

One sectional has already been decided. Greenbrier East won back-to-back games against Princeton on Tuesday and Wednesday to take the Region 3, Section 2 crown. The Spartans will wait 13 days to host the winner of Region 3, Section 1 in a regional semifinal May 27 in Fairlea.

That sectional hasn’t even started. Oak Hill and Shady Spring were scheduled to play Thursday at Oak Hill to open play, but that game was washed away. They’ll try again today at 6 p.m. The winner will get the section’s top seed, Woodrow Wilson, on Saturday. It will be a double elimination bracket and end on Monday or Tuesday.

Class AA

Independence is in the driver’s seat in Region 3, Section 1. The defending region champions were scheduled to face Summers County, which upset Liberty on Wednesday, in the championship on Thursday. That game was also washed away and will instead be played today at 6 p.m. at Liberty.

The Bobcats, who lost to Liberty to open the double-elimination bracket, would have to beat the Patriots twice to win the sectional.

The winner of that sectional will get Wyoming East in a regional semifinal on May 26. The Warriors easily won two games against rival Westside to capture the Region 3, Section 2 crown.

Bluefield and PikeView will play today at 6 p.m. in the Region 3, Section 4 championship. PikeView is in the driver’s seat without a loss in tournament play. If Bluefield wins today, a winner-take-all contest will be played Saturday at 1 p.m. All games are being played at PikeView.

There’s also area interest in Region 4, Section 1, where host Nicholas County was supposed to open play against Clay County on Thursday. That game was pushed back to today at 6 p.m. The winner will get top-seeded Herbert Hoover in the double-elimination bracket.

Class A

Greater Beckley Christian and Montcalm will play today at 3 p.m. in Region 3, Section 1 action at Meadow Bridge High School. The winner gets Greenbrier West for the championship game at 5:30 p.m.

That champion will be waiting on the champion from Region 3, Section 2. Midland Trail and Richwood will open play in that one today at 5:30 p.m. at Huse Memorial Park in Fayetteville. The winner will play top-seeded Fayetteville in the double-elimination bracket.

Valley is the host and top seed of the Region 3, Section 3 tournament. The Greyhounds were scheduled to play Van, a loser against Sherman on Wednesday, on Thursday, but that game was pushed back to today at 5:30 p.m. The double-elimination bracket will continue until only one team is left standing.
