Independence opened up Class AA Region 3, Section 1 play with a thrilling 43-41 win over the Liberty Lady Raiders Monday in Coal City.
Stacey Williams had put Liberty up 41-40 late on a rebound and a putback score, only to see freshman Jessica Lilly sink a game-winning 3-point bucket with under five seconds remaining to lift the Patriots.
Emily Fedukovich led the Lady Patriots with 13 points. Kelsey Hart added 10 and Krista Greene nine.
Krista Harris had 10 steals for Independence.
Liberty was led by Katie McGinnis with a game-high 15 points, and Williams with 12 points.
Independence advances to play Class AA No. 1 Westside tonight at Westside High School.
