Lady Eagles crash down at hands of Cabell Midland

BECKLEY — Bernie Bostick was expecting good things as his Woodrow Wilson girls entertained Cabell Midland Saturday afternoon.

“We were probably better prepared for them than we’ve been for any team we’ve played this year,” he said. “I felt really good coming in, even though we didn’t have Kavita François.”

But good scouting and two days of practice proved futile, as the Knights charged to an easy 48-21 win at the Woodrow gym.

Cabell Midland (7-3) led 11-4 after one quarter and then held the Flying Eagles to just one point in the second period.

Woodrow’s quartet of 5-foot-9 or taller inside players managed just one basket in the opening half, and was outplayed by Midland 6-footer Emily Pitkin.

Things weren’t a lot better at the guard positions, where the shots just would not fall. François, out with an ankle injury, was desperately missed.

“They can all play. They know what to do, although today it looked like we hadn’t done anything for a month,” Bostick said. “They just had a hard time, and sometimes they get down on themselves.”

Woodrow (3-7) matched its first-half five points in the third quarter, and added 11 more in the fourth.

Seven of the 11 were from freshmen guard Rebekah Cook, forward Paige Lewis and 5-10 post Brooke Pudder.

“This time last year they were playing in middle school against sixth graders. Now they’re playing against 12th graders,” Bostick said. “That will hurt, but they’re getting better.”

Lewis was the leading scorer with four points. Cook and junior starting center Breanna Thompson scored three points apiece. Guard Sarah Akers played solidly on defense, but the junior managed just two points.

Pitkin topped the Knights with 12 points. Guards Sierra Jordan and Haley Haggerty added 10 and 9 points, respectively.

Bostick called the game “a painful learning experience.”

“Some of the kids don’t care, and it spreads like a cancer. You get a general malaise at times,” Bostick said. “We look for reasons not to win — somebody sick or hurt, or people out late the night before.

“We have to get these girls to know that there’s nothing more important than basketball during basketball season.”

Woodrow plays Tuesday at Nitro and Thursday at Parkersburg.
