ROUNDUP: Greater Beckley girls open with a win

Greater Beckley Christian 52, Montcalm 26


MONTCALM — Greater Beckley Christian raced out to a 28-10 halftime lead and eased by Montcalm 52-26 in the season opener for both teams.

Brooke Matheny tossed in 11 points and Allie Warden added 10 to pace the Lady Crusaders.

Heather Nicewander led the Lady Generals with six points.

Greater Beckley’s (1-0) game with River View scheduled for Saturday has been moved to Jan. 20. The Lady Crusaders will host Sherman next Tuesday.

Wyoming East 71, Liberty 21

Wyoming East led 36-4 at halftime and cruised to a season-opening win over Liberty.

Bri Pertee led the Lady Warriors with 14 points and eight rebounds. Megan Davis scored 11 points and made nine steals, while Hailey Lowman dished out six assists.

Stacie Williams had 12 rebounds and eight points for Liberty.

East will host James Monroe at 7 p.m. Friday.

Greenbrier East 74, Sherman 21

FAIRLEA — The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans shook off a sluggish start by outscoring Sherman 48-6 in the second and third quarters to roll past the Lady Tide 74-21 in the season opener.

Sydney Nunley opened the season with a triple-double, scoring 11 points, grabbing 16 rebounds and recording 10 blocks to lead the Lady Spartans.

Chaunte McDowell led all scorers with 20 points, while point guard Chloe Honaker had seven steals and five assists in the win.

Lexi Tincher added 14 points and Taylor Hill had 11 for the Lady Spartans.

Greenbrier East (1-0) hosts St. Albans Saturday.
