An eagle is a bird of prey with a long wingspan and keen vision; a hunter.
The Flying Eagles released their own “Hunter” with a long wingspan and keen vision loose on some Spartans Tuesday night.
Hunter Greco picked up his third win of the season in a 4-1 victory for Woodrow over their bitter rival, Greenbrier East.
“It feels great,” a smiling Greco said after the game. “It always feels great to beat Greenbrier East. They’re our biggest rival, and they’ll always be our biggest rival.”
“It was a big win,” Woodrow skipper Mark Daniel said. “We played good defense and hit the ball well. Greco was on today. He had a good all-around ballgame. He threw good pitches. You can’t ask for any more than that.”
Greco struck out six Spartans, giving up seven hits and one run in the complete game victory.
“I was just trying to get outs,” Greco said.
Greco scored on a Logan Wriston sacrifice fly in the third inning to put the Flying Eagles up 1-0.
In the fourth, Greenbrier East’s R.J. Massie pulled off one of the gutsiest plays in baseball, stealing home to bring the game even.
The Flying Eagles cracked it open in the bottom of the fifth when Greco knocked freshman Avery Lagowski home on a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run.
To say Greco earned his win would be an understatement.
“I was honestly just trying to get an RBI,” he said. “I wasn’t worried about hits. I was just hoping to knock that run in.”
The win signaled a change in the tide for the Flying Eagles. After starting the season 0-4, they’ve battled back to an 11-8 record and are beginning to turn heads.
“We’re finally getting outside,” Daniel said on his team’s change in fortune. “Like many of the other teams around here, we wasn’t outside. That starts to play with you. It doesn’t help you get your batting eye down.”
The Spartans will have their chance at revenge when the two teams meet up again on Thursday evening in Fairlea.
“It’s going to be a lot like it was tonight,” Daniel said. “It’s going to be a low scoring, tight game. We’ve got to go play good up there. They’re a good ball club.”
Greco echoed those sentiments.
“I think it’ll be another good game,” he said. “We came after them tonight ,and we’ll come for them on Tuesday, too.”
That game will begin at 5 p.m.
