Week 11 football phenoms

The high school football regular season came to an end in West Virginia on Saturday, with the completion of a number of games that had to be delayed because of Hurricane Sandy.

But the season didn’t end without some more spectacular performances from athletes from around the area, including some who are claiming game balls for the first time.

Isaiah Brown (Summers County) — Summers County needed some big performances to end the regular season with a win over Class A power Valley, and that’s just what it go from Isaiah Brown. In a 28-20 Bobcat win, one that improved them to 7-3, the junior running back ran for 120 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, helping his team secure a No. 11 seed in the Class AA playoffs.

Cole McClain (Greenbrier East) — Greenbrier East and James Monroe were playing for nothing more than pride and bragging rights Saturday night, but McClain didn’t let that change the way he played. The Spartan running back ran for 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns as East upended its border county rival 45-6. A junior, McClain will try to carry some of that confidence into 2013 to try to help the Spartans get back to the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

Gary Poindexter (Wyoming East) — The Wyoming East head coach had a lot of work to do at the end of September when his team was 3-2 and coming off a loss to a Mount View team that had lost 31 straight prior to the game with the Warriors. Wyoming East had also lost to county rival Westside, and its offense was struggling. Down the stretch, though, Poindexter guided his club to wins in four of its last five games, including a 41-22 victory over Liberty on Saturday, and got them into the Class AA playoffs as a No. 10 seed.

Adam Weeks (Shady Spring) — Even with his final football game obviously not going the way he wished, Weeks continued to fight Friday night against Musselman, showing why he was an all-state pick as a junior in 2012. The Tiger quarterback had a huge individual game, throwing for 357 yards and four touchdowns and running for 34 more in a 65-34 loss to the Applemen.

Jordan Wilson (River View) — River View was put in a pressure-packed situation on Saturday, facing a matchup with Westside where the winner earned a playoff spot and the loser was sent home. But Wilson was up for the challenge. The Raiders’ running back ran for 184 yards and a touchdown, while also catching a pass for three yards in his team’s 18-12 victory that locked up a No. 14 seed in the Class AA playoffs.
