Prep Baseball Roundup

HUNTINGTON — Clayton Anderson tripled and drove in three runs as George Washington defeated Wyoming East 9-1 in the season opener for both teams at Linda K. Epling Stadium in Beckley.

Zack Whitten drove in the lone run for East, the reigning Class AA state champion.

The Warriors will visit Liberty at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Valley 20-19, Cross Lanes Christian 3-8

SMITHERS — Arik McGinnis led Valley to a pair of season-opening victories over visiting Cross Lanes Christian.

McGinnis went 2-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in in the first game, and was 2-for-3 with a double and RBI in the second.

John Riddle picked up the victory for the Greyhounds in Game 1, while Drew Jones did the same in the second.

Valley will travel to Hinton to take on Summers County at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

    The Patriots led 5-0 after two innings, and Brian Sexton — backed by that very offense and some sparkling defense — gutted out a complete game in a 7-5 win in the Class AA Region 3 semifinals Tuesday night.

    Valley’s potent offense never came to life, but the Greyhounds are still alive.
    Valley (22-7) — with several players hitting .400 or better this season — could muster just three singles against underdog Man (6-20-1) in one of two Class A Region 3 baseball semifinals Tuesday, but the ’Hounds manufactured two runs in the crucial fifth inning to finally go ahead of the stubborn Hillbillies and escape with a 3-2 victory.
