Bobcats beat Beavers in 4 OTs

Class AA No. 3 Summers County outlasts Bluefield

BLUEFIELD — Wayne Ryan has been part of a lot of things during his tenure as Summers County’s girls basketball coach.

But Tuesday was a first.

The Class AA No. 3 Bobcats needed four overtimes before finally defeating Bluefield 79-73 in a game that saw a combined 79 free throws attempted and five players foul out.

“We have had 3-overtime games. One season we had two 3-overtime games, and we’ve had four overtime games in one season,” Ryan said. “Never in my 26 years have I been part of a 4-overtime game.”

The Bobcats (9-0) needed heroics in regulation just to get that far.

Trailing 52-49 and needing a 3-pointer to tie, Summers drew up an inbounds play. Things didn’t go as planned.

“We made the wrong read and took a shot, but it was just 2,” Ryan said. “But we got the rebound and kicked it out to Avery (Pivont).”

Pivont drained the 3 and it was time for a whole lot of extra basketball.

Summers played all four overtimes without freshman point guard Whittney Justice, who fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Ryan was happy with the way his team responded.

“You can’t fault the effort and determination they put forth,” he said.

The Beavers (7-3) wound up losing four players to fouls. Brittney Justice was 17-of-18 at the line for Summers.

“That was clutch,” Ryan said.

Brittney Justice finished with 25 points and had five steals for Summers. Brandy Morrison had 15 points.

Brenna Davis scored 11 and made nine steals, while Abby Taylor scored 10 points and had six steals.

Bluefield got 16 each from Dazia Edwards, Destiney Sims and Deja Taxley

Summers will host Wyoming East at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
