BECKLEY —
Like magic, everything suddenly fell into place for Parkersburg South.
Leading by two points midway through the third quarter, South outscored Musselman 23-8 the rest of the way to claim a 59-42 victory Friday night in a Class AAA semifinal of the Big Atlantic Classic at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
The seventh-ranked Patriots dominated the boards, ran the floor, got great play from their bench and shot the lights out to improve to 13-3 on the season.
“We were very sluggish in the first half, but we adjusted,” coach Mike Fallon said. “We started making them shoot over top of us. Our matchup (defense) really gave them fits.”
Musselman (11-4) resorted to a triangle-and-one on South scoring duo Wes Mitchem and Doug Dennis. Mitchem finished with 15 points and Cox had just seven. Mitchem also had eight rebounds.
But Logan Lawrentz came off the bench to score nine points, while fellow reserve Dylon Ripetto hit two 3s and scored six. Tyler Berry added three points, and the trio contributed a combined 11 rebounds while making just four turnovers.
“When our kids came off the bench and started hitting shots, it was hard for them to stay in the triangle,” Fallon said.
Trevon Wesco scored 14 points — including eight of the Applemen’s second-half 17. He also had 10 rebounds and five assists.
Tommy Hargrove followed with eight points.
The Applemen will play Greenbrier East at 12:20 p.m. today in the bracket consolation game.
Logan Cox scored 10 points for Parkersburg South.
The Patriots will meet Point Pleasant at 9 p.m. today for the bracket championship.
