Sometimes, it’s not about the record.
Just ask Valley girls basketball coach Marshall Murray, who is confident his 6-13 team is ready to play some serious basketball in the postseason.
“We’re playing really well right now,” said Murray, whose Greyhounds take on Pocahontas County at 7:30 p.m. today in Dunmore in the Class A Region 3, Section 1 tournament. “That Payne girl is hard to stop.”
Murray is referring to 5-foot-11 forward Alexis Payne, who is averaging 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks a game.
“She’s averaged around 30 points in our last four games,” he said. “She can do it all, and with the competition we play, it’s something for her to do all that.”
While Valley has 13 losses, seven were against AA’s Summers County and Oak Hill, and AAA’s Riverside and Capital. Two more were against Class A power Charleston Catholic.
“We try to play a pretty tough schedule,” Murray said. “We’re starting to round into shape.”
Valley has another standout in the making in freshman point guard Abby Buchan, who averages 12 points a game.
Murray said the speedy Buchan is “a blur some nights.”
“Abby is our leading percentage shooter,” he said. “If she has a good night, it ought to be a heck of a game.”
The Greyhounds will face an 18-4 Pocahontas County squad that is ranked No. 7 in the latest Associated Press poll.
The Warriors’ losses were to AAA No. 8 Woodrow Wilson, AA No. 3 Summers County and No. 6 Clay County, and A No. 8 Tucker County.
“They’re a good 3-point shooting team,” Murray said. “They pressure you with full-court, man-to-man defense.
“We have to overcome their pressure and get a hand on their shooters. All of them can shoot.”
All-state forward Chloe Bland averages 17 points and 10 rebounds for Pocahontas County. Another forward, Miranda McNabb, adds 13 points and eight boards per game. Most of the lineup can shoot the 3.
No. 3-seeded Richwood plays at No. 2 Midland Trail in the other Section 1 matchup. The winners play Wednesday at the home of the highest remaining seed.
n Class A Region 3, Section 2 is somewhat unique in that each of its four teams has made at least one appearance in the state tournament during the past five years.
The road to Charleston could begin again for one or two of them tonight at Princeton Middle School.
Top-seeded Fayetteville will play No. 4 Greater Beckley Christian at 6 p.m. No. 2 Meadow Bridge and No. 3 Montcalm square off at 7:30 p.m.
The championship game is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. The winner and second-place team will play the runner-up and champion, respectively, from Section 1 next week with trips to the Charleston Civic Center on the line.
n The Class AA Region 3, Section 2 tournament got under way Saturday at Princeton High School, with No. 2-seeded PikeView downing No. 7 Bluefield 60-13; No. 2 James Monroe topping No. 6 Mount View 41-27; and No. 4 Greenbrier West beating No. 5 River View 37-34 in overtime.
Today, West plays No. 1 Summers County, the defending five-time state champion, in a 6 p.m. semifinal. No. 2 PikeView squares off with James Monroe at 8 p.m.
The winners play Thursday at 7 p.m. at Princeton for the championship.
Section 1 action starts today at Liberty High School. No. 4-seeded Shady Spring faces No. 5 Independence at 6 p.m., while No. 3 Oak Hill faces No. 6 Liberty at 8 p.m.
Second-seeded Wyoming East clashes with the Liberty-Oak Hill winner at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while No. 1 Westside (22-0), the state’s top-ranked AA team, awaits the Independence-Shady winner at 8 p.m.
The championship game is at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
n Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 action begins tonight at Oak Hill High School with a first-round game between the No. 4 and 5 seeds, Nicholas County and Riverside.
The semifinals are Wednesday, pitting No. 2 Woodrow Wilson against No. 3 Princeton at 6 p.m., and the Nicholas-Riverside survivor against current Class AAA No. 1 Greenbrier East (21-1) at 8 p.m.
Finals are set for 7 p.m. Friday, also at Oak Hill.
