Heavy snow, dangerous travel and power outages have taken their toll on this week’s sectional volleyball tournaments.
n The Class AA Region 3, Section 1 tournament was supposed to have started Monday at Liberty High School. Now it’s in limbo.
“The last I heard was it’s been canceled until further notice,” Independence High School coach Patty Bryant said. “I hate the delay. Everybody was pumped up and anxious, but everybody else is in the same boat.”
Liberty coach Julie Firebaugh said, “The Board of Education has said no afterschool activity is allowed Tuesday and Wednesday. The earliest we could have the tournament will be Thursday.”
Regionals are Saturday at Summers County High School.
n Greater Beckley Christian and Appalachian Bible College were sharing the Class A Region 3, Section 1 tourney. It was to have started Monday as well.
“We were using both gyms to do a double-elimination tournament,” Greater Beckley coach Kerie Lopez said. “Our athletic director told me to cancel everything until Thursday, and it would be single elimination.”
n It’s hoped the Class A Region 3, Section 2 tournament will be played today and Thursday at Fayetteville High School.
“They’re going to see if we can play if there’s no school,” Meadow Bridge coach Tim Goode said. “The SSAC has told us sectionals have to be done by Friday.”
The Region 3 tournament will be played Saturday at Meadow Bridge.
n Woodrow Wilson is to host the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament Thursday.
“As far as we know right now, we’re playing Thursday,” Woodrow coach Shirley Brown said. “Everything could change, depending on whether the Section 1 tournament gets played tonight in Charleston.”
If Section 1 played Tuesday, the tournament will go as planned Thursday at Woodrow. Should Section 1 be pushed back a day, so will Section 2 because the same referees are working both tournaments.
Woodrow will host the Region 3 tournament Saturday.
