GLEN DANIEL — Shady Spring outscored Independence 20-0 in the third quarter en route to a 60-31 win in the Class AA Region 3, Section 1 girls basketball tournament at Liberty High School.

Shady’s Lyndsey Thompson led all scorers with 26 points while Morgan Hylton 15 and Tricia Gibson added 10.

Alissa Ward led Independence with 11 points.

Shady Spring plays top-seeded Westside in the Section 1 semifinals today at 8 p.m. at Liberty.



Oak Hill 51, Liberty 32

The Red Devils broke up a close game with a 20-6 run in the third quarter to advance in the Class AA Region 3, Section 1 tournament at Liberty.

Emily Aurednik led balanced-scoring Oak Hill with 16 points.

Marissa Long led Liberty with 15 and Stacy Williams added 10.

Oak Hill plays Wyoming East in the Section 1 semifinals at 6 p.m. today.



Pocahontas County 73, Valley 43

DUNMORE — Chloe Bland became Pocahontas County’s all-time leading scorer, boys or girls, as Pocahontas County bounced Valley from the Class A Region 3, Section 1 tournament.

Bland scored a game-high 30 points and now has 1,336 for her career.

She also had 11 rebounds and five steals against the Greyhounds.

Miranda McNabb added 17 points, 11 assists and four blocked shots. Tristan day scored 10 points, and Erin White made five steals.

Valley was led by Alexis Payne’s 19 points, and Abby Buchan added 17.

The Warriors (19-4) will host Midland Trail at 7 p.m. Wednesday for the section championship.



Nicholas County 53, Riverside 38

OAK HILL  — Shealyn Young scored 25 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to lead Nicholas over Riverside in the play-in game of the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 tournament at the Lilly Center.

Lauren Young added eight in the win.

Rachel Mills and Brittany Wood had 10 points each for Riverside.

The Grizzlies will face top-seeded Greenbrier East in the section 2 semifinals Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Oak Hill High School.



Final regular season rankings released

The Greenbrier East unbeaten streak, and its reign atop the Class AAA girls basketball rankings has ended.

The Spartans suffered their first defeat of the season, falling to South Charleston 65-52 in the Mountain State Athletic Conference title game Saturday.

In the Associated Press poll released Monday, Greenbrier East (20-1) dropped to No. 2.

Bridgeport (21-1) rose to the No. 1 position. The Indians have won 17 games in a row, and haven’t lost since Dec. 17.

No. 10 Woodrow Wilson (13-7) lost twice last week and fell two spots in the rankings.

In Class AA, No. 1 Westside finished the regular season with a 21-0 mark.

Summers County (17-5) knocked off Clay County and Woodrow Wilson last week, and maintained its No. 3 ranking, while PikeView (14-9) stayed at No. 10 with two victories last week.

Midland Trail 60, Nicholas County 43

SUMMERSVILLE  — Casey Kessler had 22 points as eight rebounds as the Class A No. 4 Patriots rolled by Class AAA Nicholas County Monday.

Jordan Burdette added 16 points, Sidney Crist 11 assists, and Casey Deskins returned to the lineup since fracturing both wrists in January.

Jared Tharp led Nicholas County with 13.

Midland Trail is at Greenbrier West today.

n WWHS Lassie Camp

Woodrow Wilson High School Lassie Dance Camp will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
