Annual BNI wrestling set for Dec. 7

BECKLEY — The calendar has made for some challenging scheduling for the annual Beckley Newspapers Invitational.

The event will take place Saturday, Dec. 7, at Shady Spring High School. Weigh-ins will start at 8 a.m.

Joining the host Tigers will be Woodrow Wilson, Greenbrier East, Princeton, Liberty and Wyoming East. Woodrow edged Shady by a half point to win last year’s tournament.

The BNI often serves as the season opener for many teams. But with the way the dates fell this year, some teams that are usually at the tournament will be unable to attend.

That includes Richwood, which will host the annual Bill Hutchinson Classic that same day. Nicholas County elected to wrestle in that tournament, as did Midland Trail.

“We would like to get more local schools, but I understand some are still tied up with football and others are committed to other tournaments,” Shady Spring coach Larry Ransom said.

Ransom said there is still the possibility of getting more teams. He has invited Bluefield but has yet to get a response, and he could extend invitations to two or three others on Monday.

Still, he is excited to get started and is happy with the field thus far.

“We’ve got some pretty good schools coming in here,” Ransom said.
