Lady Spartans prevail in double-overtime

FAIRLEA — GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Greenbrier East 67, Alleghany 63, 2 OT

FAIRLEA — Chaunté McDowell and Sydney Nunley hit foul shots down the stretch as the unbeaten Lady Spartans pulled out the win.

McDowell led all scorers with 24 points. Nunley had 18, while Lexi Tincher added nine.

Nunley pulled down 29 rebounds and had 10 blocks. McDowell had six assists and five steals.

McDowell was named the tournament MVP. Nunley and Chloe Honaker joined her on the all-tournament team.

Anna Beard led Alleghany with 14 points. Elaing Fridley had 13.

Greenbrier East (5-0) will play Point Pleasant at 6 p.m. Friday in the Spartan Holiday Tournament. Preston County meets Fayetteville at 4:30 p.m., and the Spartan boys will take on Parkersburg Catholic at 9 p.m.

Piper Nunley hit the winning foul shot as the Lady Spartans won the JV game 39-38.

Westside 63, Knott County, Ky., 50

BELFRY, Ky. — The Lady Renegades improved to 4-0 on the season Saturday afternoon by knocking off Knott County (Ky.) 63-50.

Junior sensation Hope Lester led the way with a 17-point, 17-rebound double-double. Faith Davis netted 15 points and Megan Endicott and Kristin Hash had 11 rebounds each.

Knott County’s duo of Waugh and Hatmaker led with 15 and 11 points, respectively.

Westside will return to action Jan. 9 in New Richmond against county rival Wyoming East.

Nicholas County 59, Princeton 35

SUMMERSVILLE — The Lady Grizzlies picked up their first win of the season with a 59-35 victory over Class AAA Princeton Saturday.

Mykenzie Martin led the way for Nicholas County with 12 points while Sophie Kiser had 11.

The Lady Tigers were led by Adrianna Mitchem, who had 11.

Princeton will travel to Shady Spring on Jan. 2, while Nicholas County will begin play in the Armory Classic on Friday.

UPPER GLADE — Candace Riffle broke a close game with a 3-pointer to send Webster County on to the victory.

Sam Stout led the Lady Highlanders (4-2) with 18 points. Nikki Williams had 15 and Meghan Bragg scored 10.

Kendall Malay paced Fayetteville with 26 points. Maddie Pritt added 16 points, while Avina Sedlock had 15 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals.

Fayetteville (3-2) will play Friday in the Greenbrier East holiday tournament.
