Mayor Emmett Pugh was absent from the Tuesday Common Council meeting due to illness, so Council nominated Councilman Cedric Robertson to act as chair.
A resolution was approved for open burning from March 1 to May 31 between the hours of 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.
City attorney Bill File said this resolution is adopted each year at this time and the Beckley Fire Department is authorized to control open burning.
Another resolution was approved for a grant for the West Virginia Dance Company. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin’s Community Participation Grant in the amount of $10,000 was awarded to the West Virginia Dance Company. The City of Beckley is the designated conduit for these funds, which will be used to purchase advertising and equipment.
A final resolution was approved to execute an agreement between the City of Beckley and Appalachian Power Company for the power company to provide and maintain the city street lights for the next 10 years.
File explained that the prices have been approved by the Public Service Commission, but the PSC may change the rates throughout the 10 year period.
The agreement specifies each type of lamp, the wattage, and the hours of lighting, which will be from one-half hour after sunset until one-half hour before sunrise.
Chief Code Enforcement Officer Bob Cannon presented an application for an ABCA license for Save Smart, located at 1101 West Neville Street.
The next Common Council meeting will be held March 12 at 7:30 p.m.
