Region under winter weather advisory today

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh and Summers counties until 3 p.m. today, but determining exactly what weather to expect is dicey, said Joe Merchant, meteorologist for the National Weather Service’s Charleston office.

Merchant said a pocket of warmer air may keep Raleigh and Fayette counties with rain but rain, snow, sleet or freezing rain could be expected in the higher altitudes, he said.

The warm air pocket will keep temperatures hovering right around 32 Thursday night, allowing for a range of possible precipitation this morning.

Some southeast winds could gust up to 30 miles per hour and ice accumulations up to 0.2 inch are possible, particularly in eastern parts of counties.
