Raleigh County BOE welcomes student representatives

Assistant principal at Shady Spring Elementary is hired

The Raleigh County Board of Education welcomed the first of four student representatives to their Tuesday meeting.

Jessica Black, a senior from Independence High School, was the first high school student chosen to give an overview of her experience and offer suggestions to the board.

Black is the senior class president, a member of National Honor Society, vice-president of the Key Club and maintains a 4.0 grade point average.

Black said her most informative experience in high school so far has been attending the Governor’s Honor’s Academy at West Virginia University as one of the top 200 students from across the state.

She asked that because so many governor’s schools are being shut down across the nation that the Raleigh board advocate for West Virginia’s if given the opportunity.

The Independence High School Senior has been accepted to WVU as a Dean’s Honors Scholar and plans to major in biology. She hopes to later attend medical school at WVU and work with disaster relief and as a medical missionary.

One student selected from each high school will attend three board meetings as student representatives.

Also during the meeting, the board approved the superintendent’s recommendation for Josh Grant to be hired as assistant principal of Shady Spring Elementary. Grant is currently a physical education teacher at Woodrow Wilson High School.

The Raleigh County Board of Education will next meet at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at the central office on Adair Street.
