Santa Paws is coming to town and he’s bringing some special gifts to his furry friends.
Scruffy, a terrier mix, suited up in his Santa outfit Friday to deliver food donations and toys to the Raleigh County Humane Society.
His owner, Janie Derringer, said Scruffy was adopted from the Raleigh County Humane Society last October and she is very thankful to have him in her life.
“I had a dog for 13 years, but he had a heart condition and we had to put him down last June,” Derringer said. “My mother then passed away in July and it was a rough time.”
A few months later, Derringer decided she was ready for another canine companion, so she decided to visit the Humane Society’s animal shelter.
“We went to the shelter and saw this tiny dog in a huge cage. He only weighed about 2 pounds and he looked at us like, ‘What are you doing here?’”
She said after playing with him, she fell in love and adopted him.
“He’s been a great little dog. He’s spoiled rotten, but he’s just been great.”
Ever since she adopted Scruffy, she said she had wanted to take him back to the shelter with donations so he could give back, but for a while she was simply unable to do so financially.
Their time has now come and she is very excited to be helping out the animal shelter.
“The shelter needs it so much. At Christmas time, it seems like these little animals are kind of put on the back burner. Not only do they not have anyone to play with, but they’re stuck in their cages. It’s heartbreaking.”
She and Scruffy delivered dry and canned cat food and dog food, cat litter and a whole stocking stuffed with toys.
“We hope this gesture will bring some attention and people will make some donations. There is so much the shelter needs.”
