Raleigh BOE renews superintendent’s contract

Raleigh County Schools Superintendent Dr. Charlotte Hutchens will keep her position another year after the school board awarded her a new one-year contract this week.

Board President Richard Snuffer said the board was in “total agreement” to offer the contract and hopes the 2011-12 school year will get them started on a some major projects.

“Next year we want to explore the possibility of a bond for as many as three new elementary schools in town with Dr. Hutchens’ assistance,” he said.

Several of the schools in Beckley do not have air conditioning and building new elementary schools has been prominent on a long-term plan, he added.

Hutchens was given a 2.5 percent cost of living increase from her 2010-11 year $138,899 salary, said Snuffer.

In May 2009, the school board hoped to keep Hutchens to maintain consistency after several individual from the central office retired. At that time, The Register-Herald reported Hutchens was considering retirement and did not know if she would work the full two-year contract awarded in May 2009.

“I thought I would be leaving,” said Hutchens. “It’s one of those things that is hard to explain. As the year evolved I realized I was not ready. The board wants to lay the groundwork for some projects and I will be helping with the planning and talking to the community,” she said.

“We will start working on the elementary schools project. I don’t know how far we will get, but we will at least start working,” she added.

Snuffer mentioned that the board has been “very appreciative of the job she does” and he hailed her as “one of the top superintendents in the state.”

Her leadership, he continued, will be used to help complete the new Marsh Fork Elementary School project.

Although Hutchens was not sure how long she would stay two years ago, this year she is steadfast. “My mind is set that I will continue next year up to the last minute of the last hour.”
