AAA has dropped a diamond from The Greenbrier’s rating, joining the Forbes Travel Guide in ranking the resort one tier below the highest level.
The travel service’s prestigious Five Diamond rating goes to only 0.3 percent of the 59,000 AAA/CAA approved and Diamond rated hotels and restaurants.
According to AAA’s announcement Friday, the 2013 Five Diamond list includes 125 hotels and 53 restaurants, including 13 new additions this year.
The Greenbrier was awarded Four Diamonds, still an exclusive level. Only 4.8 percent of the 30,000 lodging establishments evaluated by AAA received the Four Diamond rating in 2013.
AAA’s ratings are based on “on-site, professional evaluations guided by member priorities,” according to the firm’s website. Inspectors check everything from landscaping to extra pillows in making their evaluations of each property.
Information on the website indicates a Four Diamond hotel must be “upscale in all areas ... refined and stylish.” The description continues, “Fundamental hallmarks include extensive amenities and a high degree of hospitality, service and attention to detail.”
The resort had been one of only three lodging establishments to earn the Five Diamond ranking from AAA every year since the rating system began in 1976, according to The Associated Press.
The Greenbrier also dropped a level in the Forbes Travel Guide’s 13 years ago, falling to Four Star status.
Officials at The Greenbrier could not be reached for comment on Friday.
