Federal safe schools grants awarded

Greenbrier County has been awarded $240,000 of the nearly $850,000 of West Virginia Safe Routes to School Grant Program presented to projects in four counties.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin presented the Federal Highway Administration funds Monday for projects in Barbour, Greenbrier, Kanawha and Wood counties.

The West Virginia Safe Routes to School grant program is part of a national program funded by the Federal Highway Administration to substantially improve the safety of children as they walk or bicycle to school. Projects include upgrading current school crossing systems, improving or creating American’s with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalks in the area of the schools, or creating safer access to a school’s walking path and playground equipment.

According to Tomblin’s office, Rainelle Elementary School was awarded $130,000 for the Sumac Lane Sidewalk Corridor Project and Alderson Elementary School was awarded $110,000 for a Safe Routes to School Project.
