Monroe seeks money for service projects

When teams of Boy Scouts arrive in Monroe County this summer for their “day of service,” local officials want to be sure everything is in place to ensure work can proceed at each of the 21 projects approved for the young men to tackle.

“The County Commission is asking the Legislature for funding to purchase materials for the projects,” County Clerk Donald Evans explained, noting the amount requested is $10,000, according to discussion at Wednesday’s Commission session.

Many of the projects the Boy Scouts will take on involve improvements at local schools, Evans said. Everything from re-sealing the playground at Peterstown Elementary to upgrading locker rooms at Mountain View School will be on the task chart when some 40,000 Scouts visit the region during the National Jamboree in July.

The Scouts are expected to volunteer around 300,000 man-hours for community service projects in nine counties surrounding the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in Fayette County.

Other Monroe County projects include restoration of “The Fountain,” an old stone structure in the Peterstown area, and making improvements to a hiking trail near Waiteville.

Also at Wednesday’s meeting:

- Commissioners voted to re-elect Shane Ashley president and Bill Miller vice president of the county’s governing body.

- Commissioners agreed to get a quote on replacing ceiling tiles in the courtroom of the county courthouse in Union. The tiles suffered damage due to a leak that is being addressed by replacement of the courthouse’s roof.

- Commissioners agreed to join with Summers County in establishing a Day Report Center. An application for state funding for the endeavor will be forthcoming, according to Evans.
