Camp head asks for rate hike

Camp Summers Director Sandy Turner has asked the Summers County Commission for around a 10 percent rate increase to compensate for rising utility costs and the increasing cost of food.

She estimates the utility and food costs will be about $19,000 higher during the 2013-14 camp season.

“We don’t want to raise the rate,” said Turner. “The camp means so much to so many people, but we have to cover costs and try to preserve the facility.”

Right now the camp, which was built in the 1930s, is undergoing extensive maintenance.

The camp has upgraded its electrical wiring and is currently putting new roofs on all buildings — six cabins, a dining hall, and a maintenance building.

Turner said the camp will then repair ceilings where roofs have leaked and update the softball field with a new back stop.

She expects these repairs to be finished prior to spring camping season.

The next major project will be an overhaul of the camp’s 35-year-old swimming pool.

The camp also had to recover from felled trees and damage during the June derecho.

Turner said in addition to losing trees and a pump house, some pool equipment was broken and around $4,000 of food products were lost.

“We had four groups, including day camps and family reunions, that were not able to come and enjoy Camp Summers because we were without power,” she said.

The camp, which serves as many as 2,000 people from May 1 through Oct. 31, still has dates open and ready to be booked.

“The camp is a wonderful place for any type of band or sports camp as well as reunions and retreats. We try to continue to preserve the rustic atmosphere it has always been known for,” she added.
