Sophia Tailgate Halloween serves more than 1,100 kids

SOPHIA — Although Halloween festivities were postponed a few days, that certainly didn’t stop trick-or-treaters from coming out to the fourth annual Sophia Tailgate Halloween Saturday.

Sophia City Fire Department Chief Jeff Pittman said more than 1,100 kids came to collect candy at the fire station.

“The event has grown every year, but we never expected this many.”

Fortunately for the trick-or-treaters, there was more than enough candy to go around.

The fire department and the Spirit Committee started collecting donations from local businesses six months ago to purchase goodies for the event.

Pittman said some of the businesses sent representatives to disperse the candy and many firefighters volunteered their time to help out as well.

The event was originally scheduled for Halloween night, but due to weather conditions, it was rescheduled for Saturday.

“We always make it in conjunction with trick-or-treat night in Sophia,” Pittman said. “We want to provide a safe environment for kids to come and collect candy.”

Pittman noted a special thanks to Billie Coleman, chair of the Spirit Committee, as well as all the businesses that donated to make the event possible.
