Chuck Smith Memorial Ride slated for Saturday

BECKLEY — Beckley Police Department Chief Tim Deems is inviting motorcycle riders to participate in the fifth annual Chuck Smith Memorial Ride on Saturday.

Sponsored by the Iron Shield Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club, the ride begins with a breakfast at 10 a.m., and riders hit the road for a four-hour run at noon.

The route will be announced at the event, which will start at the Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex in Beckley.

“Chuck was a very dedicated police officer and was killed in the line of duty doing that job that he loved,” Deems said. “We just want to take the time to remember him and everything he sacrificed for his community.”

Registration is $15 per rider and $20 for a rider with a passenger.

Proceeds benefit the West Virginia Chapter of Concerns for Police Survivors, a nonprofit organization that provides resources for survivors of officers killed in the line of duty.

On Saturday, Sept. 7, the YMCA of Southern West Virginia will host the Chuck Smith 5K Run. Proceeds from that event will sponsor YMCA scholarships for underprivileged children.
