Bluefield State College Associate Degree Nursing students at the Erma Byrd Higher Education Center in Beaver have augmented their classroom experience with a guest speaker and a pair of community services initiatives during October.
BSC ADN Beckley students in their first semester took part in a health fair for Raleigh General Hospital’s “Senior Friends” Oct. 16. Students rotated among responsibilities that included greeting and registration, blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening and administering more than 200 flu vaccines.
“Until this event, these students’ learning has taken place in the nursing lab, so this was their first ‘hands-on’ patient care experience,” noted Deborah Tonelli, BSC ADN assistant professor of Nursing.
“It was gratifying to see these new students set aside some initial hesitation as they gained confidence and began interacting with patients,” she added.
On Oct. 17, third semester BSC ADN students were treated to a guest speaker, Angela Reedy, RN case manager from Raleigh General Hospital. Reedy discussed the role of case management in the hospital setting, stressing the importance of nursing documentation in patient care. She also addressed the need for providing resources to patients upon their discharge from the hospital and discussed the importance of documentation to the financial reimbursement process for the facility.
Later that day, first and second-year ADN students from Beckley participated in McNurses Night at the Beckley Plaza-area McDonald’s Restaurant. Students provided blood pressure screening, blood glucose screening and information on healthy nutrition choices.
“A few students even worked alongside McDonald’s employees behind the counter,” Tonelli added.
“McDonald’s owner Myra Harper and her staff are always very receptive about working with our students to provide community service and educational opportunities,” Tonelli said. Students were given a percentage of the sales by McDonald’s to help underwrite costs associated with the BSC ADN students’ pinning ceremonies.
