Pedestrian struck, killed on Robert C. Byrd Drive

— A Beckley man who was killed Wednesday night while trying to cross Robert C. Byrd Drive may have been drinking alcoholic beverages at the time of the crash, Beckley Police Department Chief Tim Deems reported Thursday.

Billy Francis Koontz, 62, was trying to cross five lanes of traffic around 8 p.m. in front of Macado’s when she was struck by a 2011 Kia Sorento.

Deems did not identify the driver of the vehicle, adding that there was no evidence of improper driving.
