Police release names of victims in fatal crash

JESSE — Two people who died when their car crashed in Clear Fork early Monday have been identified as Sara Renee Lomangino, 19, of Sunhill, and John Wayne Brown, 21, of Cyclone, according to Cpl. C.K. McKenzie of the Jesse detachment of the West Virginia State Police.

According to police, the accident occurred near the intersection of W.Va. 971 and Toler Farm Road. Although the exact time of the accident is unknown, officials say they believe the accident was reported about 12 hours after the vehicle entered the water.

There were no witnesses to the accident, and it was first reported at 12:45 p.m. when a nearby resident noticed fluids from the vehicle in the water, then the vehicle itself, McKenzie said.

“They impacted the side of a bridge, went airborne, struck some standing trees and then fell down onto the bank and the vehicle came to a rest in the river,” he said.

McKenzie said the data retrieval system was removed from the car Monday by an accident reconstructionist to be processed Tuesday. Authorities hope the information recovered will shed light on what happened.

McKenzie is also awaiting a toxicology report from the state medical examiner, although he added, “There is no evidence of any drugs or alcohol being involved. This is only a precautionary measure.”
