BECKLEY —
A massive Boy Scouts project could open up the doors for enormous economic development potential.
Now, a local economic development authority has changed its name partly because of that.
The 4-C Economic Development Agency has changed its name to the New River Gorge Regional Development Authority. The authority works to court new businesses for Raleigh, Fayette, Nicholas and Summers counties.
The name was formally changed July 19.
Bill Baker, chairman of the board of directors, said in an e-mail that the change was made because it identifies the covered region’s location. It is also being done to promote the Boy Scouts of America’s 11,000-acre high adventure base, The Summit: Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, expected to open in 2012. The site is located in an area known as “Garden Ground,” near Glen Jean in Fayette County.
Beckley Councilman Robert Rappold (At-Large) represents the city on the authority’s board of directors, and he agrees with Baker.
“It gives the region a true identity, and we can capitalize on this exciting Boy Scout project,” Rappold said.
Rappold said the authority works to obtain loans for small businesses, court new business and show personnel from those potential new businesses available properties.
He has high praise for both Baker and Judy Radford, executive director of the development authority.
