Raleigh deputy arrests alleged holdup man

A Beckley man is behind bars after allegedly robbing a woman at knifepoint, then running in front of a police officer who heard the call Wednesday.

Sheriff Steve Tanner said that Ryan Bailey, 24, of Johnstown Road, allegedly took an undisclosed amount of money from a woman who was at the Glen Morgan/ Raleigh Flea Market on South Eisenhower Drive Wednesday about 11:30 a.m.

The woman immediately called 911 from her cell phone, provided the emergency dispatcher with a description of Bailey and officers were quickly sent to find the man who fled the scene on foot.

Tanner explained that because the Sheriff’s Department shares a frequency with other area law enforcement, Beckley Police Lt. Paul Blume heard the call and saw a man run in front of his cruiser and then toward a vehicle that appeared to be a getaway car.

Bloom blocked the vehicle, found the weapon allegedly used and recovered the money and items stolen.

Bailey is charged with first degree armed robbery and is in the Southern Regional Jail in lieu of bond.

Tanner credits the efforts of 911 dispatch and officers for the quick apprehension.
