A 46-year-old man is being charged with the attempted murder of his 50-year-old girlfriend after a domestic altercation involving an ax, according to Oceana Police.

Chief Jeff Barlow said officers were dispatched to Short’s Mobile Home Park in Oceana on a domestic complaint at approximately 12:40 a.m. Friday.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found Lenora Ellis lying in her mobile home, unconscious and unresponsive.

Her boyfriend, Tracy Stewart, was arrested and charged with malicious wounding and attempted murder.

“He confessed to us that it was a domestic situation that turned violent,” Barlow said. “He also admitted to striking her in the head a couple times with an ax and also in the arm.”

Barlow said she had severe lacerations to her arm and her head.

She was transported by ambulance to Glen Daniel in Raleigh County, then airlifted by HealthNet to Charleston Area Medical Center.

Barlow said she was still on life support Friday evening and listed in critical condition.

Stewart is being held at Southern Regional Jail.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges could be pending.
