Country music star Daryle Singletary will headline the 35th annual Mullens Dogwood Festival Saturday at 8:15 p.m. Fireworks will immediately follow the concert.
Singletary’s hits include “Love You With The Lights On,” which is currently getting air time on radio stations across the country, along with “I Let Her Lie” and “The Note,” among others.
His new CD, “Rockin’ In The Country,” features performances by some of Nashville’s top session musicians.
Over the past 13 years, Singletary “has evolved into being a country music star known for bringing fun, entertainment and great music to country music lovers everywhere...”
Opening for Singletary will be well known area performers Wildwood, at 6 p.m., and Carter Slade, at 7 p.m.
Live entertainment will begin on stage at noon Saturday with Bad Magic Number, Taylor Wills, along with Wade Right and The Wrong Band.
The festival runs Wednesday through with the annual Bossy Bingo slated Sunday, at 3 p.m. on the Mullens Athletic Field and the annual Dogwood 5K Run and Walk scheduled May 18.
Meyers Amusement Carnival will provide carnival rides, beginning Wednesday from 6 until 10 p.m.; vendors will set up at 5 p.m.
“For 35 years, the City of Mullens has been celebrating spring with food, fun, friends and family,” noted Susan England-Lord, festival organizer.
Gospel music will be featured Friday, beginning at 6 p.m., she said.
The Lilly Mountaineers will take the stage at 8 p.m.
The Joe Stewart Family will perform at 7 p.m.
Heavenly Hands will be featured at 7:45 p.m.
Brothers Daniel and Mark Lilly are the core members of The Lilly Mountaineers. They’ve toured with national acts around the country and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry. The brothers carry on the tradition started by their father, the legendary Everett Lilly.
Also featured Friday is the annual Dogwood tree planting and memorial ceremony at 2 p.m. on the main stage. Those who want to memorialize a loved one are urged to contact Holly Johnson at 304-732-8000, extension 212, or David Wood, Tankersley Funeral Home, at 304-294-7272.
Also among the featured events will be the new Dogwood Derby, a hot dog eating contest, a photography contest, spaghetti eating contest, rubber ducky race, among others.
Vendors open at 10 a.m. Thursday-Saturday, with crafters and educational exhibits in the Veterans Memorial Building.
Stage events will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, with the Mullens Idol contest at 7 p.m. and Back Rock performing at 8:30 p.m.
A full scheduled of events will be available at the festival.
“Without the generosity of those supporting the festival, the event would not be possible,” England-Lord emphasized.
