State Fairgrounds to host Giant Spring Flea Market

FAIRLEA — The carnival midway at the State Fairgrounds will brim with fun of a different sort when more than 100 vendors set up for the Giant Spring Flea Market and Antique Show later this month.

Slated for May 17-19, the market will boast everything from “gently-used” furniture and antiques to baked goods and plants, according to State Fair of West Virginia Event Center CEO Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe.

“Based on previous years, a lot of our vendors will be folks doing their spring cleaning and seeing what they can get for items they no longer use,” she said. “We also should have quite a few antiques, and we usually have people selling used auto parts and tools — those always attract a lot of interest.”

A limited number of indoor booths will be set up inside the West Virginia Building, while most vendors will set up along the midway.

“The beauty of it is, when we started it, our goal was to start something that would be long-term,” Pierson-Jolliffe explained. “We got in a cycle with other flea markets around us and established it as the type of event we had hoped for.”

The annual event has been staged at the fairgrounds since at least 2005, Pierson-Jolliffe noted, and attendance has fluctuated with the weather.

“It always depends on the weather, much like the State Fair does,” she said. “If the weather’s good, it will draw a big crowd.”

In addition to a multitude of wares offered for sale, the Giant Spring Flea Market and Antique Show will offer plenty of tempting fair-style food, Pierson-Jolliffe said. Among the food vendors expected are Hog Wild BBQ, the Lions Club, Dippin’ Dots and the jumbo cinnamon rolls that are always a crowd favorite at the State Fair.

Flea market hours on May 17 and 18 are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on May 19, the market will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Plenty of parking is available in the free lot across from the Route 219 south fairgrounds entrance.
