Beckley event to feature arts, sweet treats

— Raleigh County Schools will host its second annual “Day with the Arts” Saturday at the Jim Word Memorial Park gazebo, located in uptown Beckley.

“Day with the Arts” will be held from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will feature a wide variety of jazz, choir, percussion, dancing and acting performances from schools all across the county.

The Seventh Annual Sweet Treats Dessert Celebration, sponsored by Beckley Renaissance, will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the park in conjunction with “Day with the Arts.”

Coal City Elementary music teacher Wendy Keeney, organizer of the event, said there will be 16 different groups performing and she is expecting a great turnout this year.

“Come out and see all the great things happening in Raleigh County Schools and all the great things our kids are doing,” Keeney said.

The schedule is as follows:

— 11 to 11:30 a.m. - Coal City Elementary School Steel Drums/Recorders

— 11:30 a.m. to Noon - Woodrow Wilson High School Jazz

— Noon to 12:30 p.m. - Sophia-Soak Creek Choir

— 12:30 to 1 p.m. - Independence Middle School Percussion

— 1 to 1:30 p.m. - Woodrow Wilson Choir

— 1:30 to 2 p.m. - Liberty High World Percussion

— 2 to 2:30 p.m. - Independence High School Choir

— 2:30 to 3 p.m. - Independence Band

— 3:30 to 4 p.m. - Liberty Acting Class

— 4 to 4:15 p.m. - Shady Spring Middle School Jazz

— 4:15 to 4:30 p.m. - Woodrow Drama

— 4:30 to 5 p.m. - Hollywood Elementary Recorders

— 5 to 5:30 p.m. - Shady Spring High School Jazz

— 5:30 to 6 p.m. - Stanaford Elementary School Dance

— 6 to 6:30 p.m. - Beckley Elementary

 

At Sweet Treats, each participating business and organization will provide 100 dessert samples.

About 18 vendors plan to participate, offering desserts such as peanut butter balls, cookies, brownies, chocolate-caramel apples, fudge, frozen yogurt, cinnamelts, blueberry lemon coffee cake, bread pudding, oatmeal pie, cupcakes and other desserts, plus fruit kabobs and drinks such as tea, coffee, and sno-cones.

Attendees will purchase tickets to sample desserts; for $5, they will receive a strip of six dessert sample tickets, plus a door prize drawing entry & Peoples Choice ballot.

Advance tickets may be purchased at the Youth Museum, Bake Shoppe and Coffee Beans and Books; a supply will also be available during the event.

Dickey’s BBQ will organize cake/pie walks during the event.

Other vendors include McDonald's, Jan-Care Ambulance, Exhibition Coal Mine, Sweet Frog, Mountain State Center for Independent Living, Sticky Fingers Apples, Women's Resource Center, Sweet Lili - mini-cupcakes, Taya & Abraham's International Grocer, Raleigh County Community Action, Bluefield State Nursing Program, McBee's.

If a rain location is needed, the event will share the covered Beckley Intermodal Gateway parking facility with the Gold Rush Flea Market.

Some of the vendors will sell other food items; and all uptown parking is free on weekends.
