Greenbrier Valley Citizen Corps and Western Greenbrier CERT will be offering a basic CERT class at the Rainelle Volunteer Fire Department on May 3 and 4. Community Emergency Response Teams or CERTs are formed by communities or neighborhoods who want to be better prepared for the hazards that threaten their community.
They are trained to help themselves, their families and their neighbors in an emergency or disaster event before emergency services can get there. CERT members are also encouraged to support emergency response agencies by taking a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in their community. The CERT training includes disaster readiness, how to assess damage after a disaster, extinguish small fires and fire safety, perform light search and rescue, perform triage and provide medical services to the injured, and disaster psychology.
