Special meeting to honor World Alzheimer’s Month

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and in observance, the Raleigh County Commission on Aging invites the community to attend a special Alzheimer’s Support Group meeting Sept. 19 at 2 p.m.

Jane Marks, retired executive director of the Alzheimer’s Association, West Virginia Chapter, will speak. Marks is a caregiver for her mother, who has Alzheimer’s, so she understands the stress that caregivers experience.

Marks’ topic will be “Welcome to the Sandwich Counter.”

“We are a whole generation of people sitting in a place together sandwiched between our careers, children, spouses and a new role we have inherited — caring for our aging parent(s),” she says.

“We are precariously sitting on this stool, trying to remain balanced among the pressures of our own personal lives and the needs of our loved ones who are no longer able to maintain their independence due to the effects of dementia.”

This workshop will explore how to relieve your caregiver stress, and how your personality or type of “sandwich” can impact your caregiving style and increase your stress.
