Celebrate music, love and Appalachia at the first annual One Love Appalachia reggae festival Saturday in Brooks. This festival is a seed that will grow into an annual event for years to come, says musician and event coordinator Shayar.
Shayar, originally from Jamaica, has been in Beckley for several years and was the resident artist at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building.
“This is something that I have been considering doing for years. I love living in the mountains, but I realized if I was going to live here forever, I would need some reggae music,” he explained.
Although the festival will feature reggae music with Shayar & Krooshal Force and DJ Mechanical Renegade, there will be something for everyone’s musical pallet at the event with jazz and blues.
Also performing will be Lady D, Cinnamon Sensation and Incredibly Handsome Army of Jasons.
But Shayar hopes that One Love Appalachia will be more than an event with great music.
“The words ‘One Love’ are so much deeper than they seem. It is about oneness, everyone being one, love for our people, and promoting a certain kind of cultural attitude,” he said.
Pairing the phrase so connected with reggae music with the word “Appalachia” has elicited a major response already, he said.
“I think the words do go together, and I want this festival to have a community connection and be something that will be good for the culture, individuals and the community,” said Shayar.
“My hope will be that in 10 years we will still be having “One Love Appalachia,” he added.
The family event will take place in Brooks rain or shine. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the gate. Children 12 years old and younger can listen free.
Concert parking will be at Meadows Auto Sales. Gates open at 1 p.m., and the show starts at 4 p.m.
CDs, T-shirts, stickers and food will be available on the concert grounds. Don’t miss the surprise guests and giveaways.
