Bridgemont to offer distance earning workshops

MONTGOMERY — A new series of free workshops from Bridgemont Community and Technical College aims to support and train those who have dreamed about starting their own home-based business or working for an established company from home.

“Many people get educated here and then leave the state to find jobs, or people move here because of the beautiful surroundings and low cost of living, and then can’t find jobs or have to drive long distances to get jobs,” says Ginger Danz, coordinator of Bridgemont’s Distance Earning Project.

The goal of the project is to find people interested in home-based businesses, provide skills and information for them to succeed, and develop a working data base of employers who hire telecommuters on a part-time or full-time basis.

The workshops will cover such topics as entrepreneurship, communication skills and IT skills. They will be held every Thursday from Oct. 25 to Dec. 6 (excluding Thanksgiving) from 12:30 to 1:50 p.m. in Room 402, Davis Hall, on the Bridgemont campus in Montgomery.

This Thursday’s workshop, Distance Earning 101, will address the skills needed for telecommuting, the benefits to employee and employer, and how to search for legitimate distance earning opportunities.

“This workshop is for you if you are seeking distance employment opportunities and want to see if you have what it takes; if you are already employed and want to learn if your job and personality lend themselves to telecommuting; you need information to convince your employer to let you work at home; or you have been thinking about starting your own home-based business,” says Danz.

The workshops are open to Bridgemont students, faculty and staff as well as community members.
