School calendar bill returns in 2010 session

CHARLESTON — A pre-Christmas storm that blanketed southern West Virginia with more than 2 feet of wet snow has put renewed emphasis on the school calendar bill.

Students got an extended holiday break because of the storm and ensuing days of single-digit temperatures.

“I think that’s brought the issue to the front again,” House Education Chair Mary Poling, D-Barbour, surmised Monday.

At the same time, the harsh weather of late December certainly wasn’t unique, she pointed out.

“I think there have been years in which even more days have been missed,” Poling said of school attendance.
