The West Virginia State Police conducted a statewide “Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Blitz Campaign” over the weekend, which resulted in 67 arrests according to First Sgt. Michael Baylous.
“It is disheartening to see 67 DUI arrests across the state during one weekend,” Baylous said. “Obviously some motorists are not getting the message that driving under the influence has negative consequences. Ideally, we would like to conduct such a blitz and see no arrests for driving under the influence. Until that happens, we must continue to educate the public on the hazards of such reckless behavior.”
Besides the DUI arrests, 352 traffic citations and 1,767 warnings were issued. An additional 91 misdemeanor arrests were made, 23 were arrested for driving on a revoked license for DUI, 53 citations were issued for driving on a suspended license, and two fugitives were arrested.
The blitz was made possible by federal grant money from the Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
