NBC visits Fayette schools for supper

Tonight’s “NBC Nightly News” will feature two counties in West Virginia, including Fayette, serving an Afterschool Supper Program.

“The piece will feature energetic and engaged kids eating a nutritious supper in a safe and supportive environment,” writes Gus Nelson of the West Virginia Department of Education Office of Child Nutrition.

Film crews visited Fayette and Doddridge counties. In Fayette County, the filming focused on Valley Elementary and High schools.

“The angle of the piece is that all schools can be and should be doing this, that supper bridges the gap for working families, and that serving supper is easier than we think,” says Nelson.

Fayette County served more after-school meals than any other county in West Virginia last year. The Valley schools received the recognition because they are close to Charleston, where film crews are based.

The crew talked to Bonnie Allman, Child Nutrition coordinator for Doddridge County Schools, and Fayette County Director of Food Service David Seay.

After-school enrichment staff, supper cooks and parents of students who rely on after-school programming were also interviewed.

“We are proud that NBC chose to feature West Virginia,” says Nelson.

The segment will air on “NBC Nightly News” this evening between 6:30 and 7 p.m.
