By Jessica Farrish

— An unidentified man was killed Tuesday and a Fayette County man was injured in a crash on W.Va. 61 in Fayette County.

According to Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler, Jeffrey Hilewitz, 53, of Cannelton, crossed the center line around 2:23 p.m. and crashed head-on with the victim’s vehicle.

Hilewitz was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center by HealthNet, and his condition was unknown as of Tuesday evening. The body of the victim was transported to Tyree Funeral Home in Oak Hill.

Rt. 61 was closed for more than an hour as deputies and responders from Jan-Care and General ambulance, Oak Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Loup Creek Fire Department cleared the scene of the accident.

The victim’s dog — a mature pet seriously injured in the crash — was taken from the wreckage by an EMT and transported to Oak Hill Animal Hospital, according to Wags n Whiskers Pet Grooming Salon owner Krista Moore, who also operates an animal rescue center in Oak Hill.

Moore said if family members don’t claim the animal, she is willing to adopt it into the rescue center.

The accident is under investigation by deputies C.M. Fitzwater and W.K. McGraw.
