BECKLEY —
State Police are reviewing surveillance videos in efforts to apprehend a man allegedly responsible for credit card fraud.
The original complaint came in early November when the suspect stole a credit card from a woman’s purse while she was shopping. Since then, he is believed to have bought $850 worth of merchandise on the stolen card. Trooper J.L. Howell says the purchases have all been made in Beckley and MacArthur stores.
“He used the card at these places all in the same day,” Howell said. “The card has the lady’s name on it and everything and he even signed her name on the receipt.”
The man is described as in his late 30s, having a goatee, short black hair and of medium build.
Credit card fraud increases and is even more difficult to catch by credit card companies around the holiday season, Howell says.
“Credit card companies don’t look at purchases like these as hard during the holidays because they just think the person is out Christmas shopping,” he said. “That’s why it’s important to check your balance statements.”
Howell says it is also important for women to keep watch of their purses, especially when out at the store.
“I’ve seen this happen all the time where the purse will be left wide open in the cart and people will turn around and grab things off the shelf,” he said. “Keep your purse zipped up and around the arms if possible. If not, wrap it a couple of times in the child seatbelt on the cart.”
Anyone with information on this incident is urged to contact State Police at 304-256-6700.
