BECKLEY — As part of its ongoing effort to celebrate more birthdays, Relay For Life will host a Relay Rally Tuesday at the American Cancer Society office from 1 to 7 p.m.

This rally will give Relay Team captains and participants an opportunity to register online, as well as allow cancer survivors to pre-register for the Relay for Life event on July 12.

Community manager Beth Cummings said they hope to gather as many teams, survivors and sponsors as possible.

“We raise funds throughout the year, then come together July 12 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. to have the Relay event.”

She said the night is full of entertainment, games and fun, but the real highlight of the night are the ceremonies.

“The opening ceremony is held and cancer survivors are invited to take the first lap around the track. The second lap is dedicated to caregivers.”

She said later that evening when it gets dark, the luminaria ceremony is held.

“We light bags in honor of, or in memory, of someone who has been affected by cancer. It’s a beautiful ceremony.”

She said the event is a great way to honor those we’ve lost and empower those who have won the fight against cancer.

Everyone is invited to come and tour the American Cancer Society office, located at 921 W. Neville St. on the corner of Harper Road and Neville Street, to receive more information to help fight cancer.

The American Cancer Society reports that nearly 14 million cancer survivors will celebrate another birthday in 2013, which is more than 450 people celebrating a birthday who otherwise would have been lost to the disease.
