Raleigh schools tap online program for maintenance reports

BECKLEY — Making maintenance reporting digital in Raleigh County schools is helping to streamline the process and save trees.

Rod Lively, director of Facilities and Maintenance, said between July 1, 2012, and Dec. 31, 2012, his office’s old fax system cranked out a total of 2,308 work orders for 29 schools, the central office, auxiliary services, transportation, special education and several other locations.

As of March 12, 2,205 of those have been completed.

On Jan. 1, the Facilities and Maintenance Department implemented an online maintenance work order program called School Dude.

Since Jan. 1, 1,038 work orders have been submitted. Of those, 769 have been completed and 194 are in progress, said Lively.

Each order entered sends the person who requested the order a confirmation e-mail and a second e-mail once the order is completed.

Superintendent Jim Brown said he is proud of the hard work the maintenance team does.

“The data speaks for itself. It speaks volumes to the amount of work the maintenance team must complete,” he said.

Lively added that the new system helps shorten response time.

It allows him to quickly alert employees of other work orders while they are on location, eliminating having to make a trips back to the office between jobs.

Lively said several large projects are anticipated being completed by the end of this school year. Including paving and adding additional outdoor lighting at Independence High School; ceiling tile replacement in main hallways at Liberty High School; installing new bleachers in the gym and repairing the water system to the baseball field at Shady Spring High School; and adding outdoor lighting, installing new entrance signs and repairing damage done to gym floor at Woodrow Wilson High School.

At the middle school level, Lively said striping and paving will be done at Independence. At Park they will paint hallways and classrooms, tile cafeteria area, and install non-slip flooring in the kitchen. Additional outdoor lighting to parking area and freshly painted parking lots and hallways at Trap Hill Middle are expected.

Sidewalk repairs are expected at Bradley Elementary, new bleachers at Coal City, updated bathrooms at Clear Fork, new bleachers and asbestos abatement for bathrooms at Cranberry-Prosperity, paved entrance and fenced playground at Fairdale, added bleachers and repaired sidewalks at Hollywood, and replaced damaged HVAC units at Shady Spring.
