The Southern West Virginia Honor Band will take place in Beckley today and Saturday.
Students for the regional honor band were nominated by band directors from 18 high schools and middle schools in Fayette, Greenbrier, Nicholas, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming counties. 175 students were selected and auditioned for chair placement in The Gold Band or The Silver Band Thursday at Beckley-Stratton Middle School.
Both bands are comprised of some high school and some middle school students, with the top high-school and middle-school students being placed in The Gold Band.
Rehearsals will be held today from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Woodrow Wilson High School band room and auditorium.
Southern West Virginia Honor Band, sponsored by the Raleigh County Bandmasters Association, will present its performance Saturday at 4 p.m. at the WWHS Auditorium.
Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens, $3 for children age 6-12, and free admission for children 5 and under.
Guest conductors of The Gold Band is Dr. Harry Faulk, former professor of music at Fairmont State College. The Silver Band will be conducted by Jay Frye, former professor of music at Glenville State College.
