NPS is looking for summer volunteers

The Resource Management division of New River Gorge National River is getting prepared for the 2014 summer Long Term Ecological Monitoring System sampling program, an annual event that is performed to assess the health of the New River and its fish and aquatic invertebrates, according to NPS New River Gorge Volunteer Coordinator Adrienne Jenkins.

Jenkins said electrofishing will take place Aug. 4-7. Volunteers will help shock and stun fish in order to identify, measure and weigh them before releasing them. The fish will not be harmed, according to Jenkins.

The second program, the aquatic invertebrate collection from Aug. 11-14, requires the picking of bugs (invertebrates), aglae and plant samples.

Both programs will involve wading in the New River and could require long work days.

Those interested in volunteering for either project may contact Jenkins at Adrienne_jenkins@ nps.gov or by calling 304-265-2634.
