Santa’s in his workshop, and preparations are well under way for Ronceverte’s annual Christmas Eve “Stocking Giveaway.”
A community tradition for the better part of a century, the giveaway is sponsored by the Ronceverte Volunteer Fire Department and supported entirely through donations.
“We’re trying to keep the tradition alive,” said VFD President Ralph Bonner. “The giveaway has been done in Ronceverte for at least 80 years.”
He said plans call for each stocking given out on Christmas Eve to contain an apple, an orange, soda pop, a box of Cracker Jacks, popcorn and a toy.
The lineup for stockings will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the Clifford Community Center (formerly the armory), and the giveaways will start at 2 p.m. sharp.
“Any youngster in line will get a stocking,” Bonner promised. “It makes no difference if they’re rich or poor. Before anyone gets extras, those in line will all get stockings.”
Bonner said it’s impossible to predict how many children will queue up on any given Christmas Eve but noted the weather usually is the determining factor for the size of the crowd.
The event is intended for children under the age of 12.
All monetary donations will be appreciated. To contribute to this holiday tradition, mail donations to: Community Christmas, c/o First National Bank, 1 Cedar St., Ronceverte WV 24970.
