Beckley police searching for suspect in robbery

Beckley City Police continued to search Monday for a man who reportedly robbed the Walgreens at 2933 Robert C. Byrd Drive on late Sunday afternoon.

A white male entered the store at 4:58 p.m., brandished a knife and demanded all the money in the register before leaving with its contents and heading south on Byrd Drive, Beckley Police Captain Jeff Shumate said.

“We know that he went to the area around South Oakwood (Avenue) and Robert C. Byrd Drive, and we’re in the process of canvassing the area and also reviewing the surveillance video,” Shumate said.

The man wore a hooded sweatshirt with a dark collar and a ball cap and is believed to be age 30 to mid-40s, Shumate said.

Police are still investigating the possibility of a vehicle used in the crime, Shumate said, but the man was last seen on foot.

Shumate said police are not currently releasing how much money the man left with and asked anyone with possible information to call Crime Stoppers at 304-255-7867 or Beckley Police at 304-256-1708.

In an unrelated incident Monday evening at the same Walgreens, authorities with the Raleigh County Emergency Operations Center reported that an individual pushed a customer to the ground in the parking lot about 5:30 p.m. and took money from the customer. Beckley Police responded.

No further information was available Monday evening.
