As interior work begins on a Daniels home that will be given away Sept. 6 to benefit the Bowers Hospice House, more donors have stepped forward to outfit the structure in high-quality materials.
“We needed to come up with a plan to pay off the Bowers Hospice House,” said Hospice of Southern West Virginia public relations director Lisa McMillion.
McMillion says Hospice owes about $400,000 on its mortgage. Charities such as the Ronald McDonald House have previously given away dream homes, and Hospice directors believed this would be a great way to raise funds to help pay off the mortgage.
Recent donations to the raffle house include granite countertops from Campbell Tile in Oak Hill; plumbing fixtures, vanities and shower/tub units from Lowe’s of Beckley and Fayetteville; $444 from Priddy’s of Crab Orchard; $1,000 from First Community Bank; site development from Graham Excavation; windows and doors from Means Lumber; a shower unit from Beaver Hardware; labor for shingles from American Dream Roofing; framing from Mountaineer Construction LLC and Lloyd Crook; Beckley Crane; and Crosier’s Sanitation.
“We’re relying on donated materials from local builders,” McMillion explained.
“These are major, multiple thousands of dollars in donations. It’s all professional donations, professional materials and professional people putting it together,” she said.
The home under construction is an 1,831-square-foot ranch with three bedrooms and two and a half baths.
It’s located off 4-H Lake Road in the Stone Creek subdivision.
McMillion says ticket purchases for the drawing already are nearing the halfway point. Only 4,000 are being sold at $100 each.
However, “nothing like this has been done in this area, and we didn’t want to give the impression that we’re being greedy,” McMillion said. “Truly the only reason we’re doing this is to raise the money to pay off the Bowers House mortgage.”
Once Bowers is mortgage-free, Hospice says all donations can be focused toward patient care and operations.
Raffle tickets can be purchased at Discount Tile, Beckley; Means Lumber, Beckley; Interior Concepts, Beckley; Bill Kinder & Associates, Beaver; First Peoples Bank, Beckley, Pineville and Mullens; First Community Bank, all Beckley locations; Campbell Tile, Oak Hill; and the Bowers Hospice House, Beckley.
